On behalf of the UK Department of Health and Social Care, GMG manages two important components of the National Institute for Health Research: the Central Commissioning Facility (CCF) and the NIHR Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure (NOCRI).
NIHR has a significant portfolio of investments in experimental medicine and early translational research infrastructure, with a value of £1 billion over five years. Our Biomedical Research Centres and Clinical Research Facilities are transforming scientific breakthroughs into life-saving treatments for patients, driving innovation, and enabling the UK’s international competitiveness in this crucial area.
We require a dynamic individual to manage this important portfolio within our Infrastructure. The right candidate could have experience within an NHS or University research environment, working within industry, or in research funding. Whatever your background, you will bring your knowledge of the UK’s translational research environment, and skills in stakeholder management and strategic leadership of complex programmes.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Infrastructure and Faculty, the postholder will lead on NIHR’s activities in experimental medicine, and contribute to other ongoing strategic priorities related to our work, including cross-NIHR projects. This will require deft handling of relationships across NIHR and with award holders and oversight of a number of key processes.
- Oversight of all processes related to commissioning of experimental medicine research and the monitoring of funded programmes of work
- Identification and realisation of new opportunities in working with NIHR infrastructure, working across all relevant stakeholders
- Development and leadership of mid-term evaluation of all relevant funding schemes
- Development and leadership of portfolio management activities related to experimental medicine
- Leading on development of key strategic initiatives, as required, with a focus on stakeholder engagement activities
- Development and establishment of engagement and impact related activities
In addition, Senior Programme Managers may be expected to line manage at least one member of staff.
Required Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills:
- A degree in biomedical or health sciences
- Knowledge of the UK’s health and care research landscape, particularly as related to translational research
- Experience of working in at least one of the following:
- Research funding
- Research management within the NHS or Higher Education Institutions, including clinical trial/study coordination
- Pharma/biotech (specifically in drug development and preferably with experience in working with the NHS)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrable success in stakeholder management within and across multiple organisations
- A track record in successful management of projects and programmes, including administrative and financial aspects
- Able to think strategically, interpreting complex information, putting information in context and having a clear view of the “big picture”
- Excellent writing skills and meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, able to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, working to challenging targets and deadlines
- Excellent analytical and complex problem solving skills, with a solution based approach
- Highly developed communication skills and customer focus, including experience of external liaison
- Committed team player with an ability to build effective working relationships
- A PhD in a medical, scientific or technical discipline
- Experience of working in a research management environment, preferably within a healthcare setting
